Bridging the gap between knowledge and understanding

July 6th , 2010 Volume 3, Issue 12

In this edition of Web Enlightenment we'll be talking about Google's view - of your site.

This newsletter focuses on giving you practical, interesting insights into how to successfully use technology as a tool to improve the way you do business. Bridging the gap between knowledge and understanding that all entrepreneurs have will help you make money online.

In honor of last weekends holiday please hit reply and tell me about your favorite BBQ treat. I answer every email sent to me.

All the best,

Google's View

Recently I've been chatting with lots of folks about search engine optimization, and I am so pleased to see that people are really properly focused on Google these days.

Google is far and away the dominant engine and as a result the bulk of your concern should be focused there.

At google they are always working to improve how their "crawler" works - but articles about how Google is endeavoring to do a better job with things like flash can distract you from the way Google sees your site now.

If you want to know the way in which Google's "Brain" views your site, just follow these simple steps.

  1. Go to Google.com
  2. Search for yourname.com
  3. The first result will be your site, and on the last line you'll see a small link that says "Cached", click it.
  4. In the upper right hand corner you'll see a link to "Text-only version", click it.
  5. Yahtzee, you are now seeing what Google sees

The reason this can be important is that for many sites what Google sees may well be a copyright notice, your footer text, or similar nonsense. You want to be sure that your site provides the basic information people might be searching for in this "text-only cached" version.

The second you view this plan text version of your site it will be obvious what you need to do to help Google understand who you are and what you do.

Sunshine Acres Update

As you may recall from earlier editions of this newsletter I am now living on 35 acres in the Augusta area.

The soil here is not spectacular so I decided to setup some raised beds this year, here is what they looked like when they were built...

And here they are today with tomato plants almost tall enough to stake...

I used a bit of fencing as a pea trellis and here is what that looks like now...

As you can see the peas are almost halfway up the fence, I think there will be some tasty things to eat there in the next few weeks. Wondering what those beach ball looking things on either end of the fence are? I have some really friendly Turkeys that hang around the farm and I would prefer it if they left my yummy garden alone, so those are Terror-Eyes Balloons, they work wonderfully and I have not seen a Turkey in the garden since I put them up.
